5 Signs You Might Need a Root Canal (and Why Waiting Makes It Worse)
Tooth pain rarely appears out of nowhere. In most cases, it's the final, loudest stage of a process that's been quietly progressing inside the tooth for weeks or months. Recognising the early signals can be the difference between a straightforward root canal and a lost tooth.
1. Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
A quick, fading zing from ice cream is normal. Pain that lingers for 30 seconds or more after the stimulus is removed suggests the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed or infected.
2. Pain when biting or chewing
Sharp pain concentrated on one tooth when you bite down often points to infection at the root tip, where pressure irritates already-inflamed tissue.
3. Swollen or tender gums near one tooth
Localised swelling — sometimes with a small pimple-like bump on the gum — is a sign infection has reached the bone around the root.
4. Darkening of a single tooth
When the nerve inside a tooth dies, the tooth often darkens gradually, even without pain. This is one of the more easily missed warning signs.
5. Pain that wakes you at night
Pressure changes while lying down can intensify pain from an infected tooth, disturbing sleep in a way sinus or gum sensitivity rarely does.
If any of these sound familiar, book a same-day assessment. Modern root canal treatment is comfortable, and catching infection early almost always means a faster, simpler procedure.
